Miscellaneous

The Board of Management does not accept responsibility for the children’s property. There is a lost property box in the office. Parents should encourage children to be responsible for their clothing. Children should have their names on their coats, tracksuit tops, jumpers and other personal property such as schoolbooks, copies, lunch boxes, etc. as many items are left around the school during the year with no way of knowing who owns them. Birthday invitations may only be handed out in school if all the boys or girls or class are being invited. For smaller group parties please contact families out of school time to avoid undue upset.

Religious Education

The family:Parents/guardians are the primary educators of their children in faith. In the
home they can introduce young people to the lived reality of faith through prayer, moral
formation, everyday expressions of love and reconciliation, good example and simple
sharing of the faith journey.

Catholic schools build upon this foundation and work collaboratively with
parents/guardians in the Religious Education of their children.

The parish is where the child learns the meaning of worship, encounters Christ in the
sacraments, and shares in the practical outreach of the Christian community in mission to
the world. Parish-based catechetical programmes can support family catechesis, schoolbased sacramental preparation, liturgical formation, and provide many different opportunities for apostolic action and personal spiritual growth.

The school:  Religious Education in the Home and Parish will complement this curriculum taught in the school.

School Meetings

Are advised through Aladdin or can be arranged to the school office.

Learning with Technology

In school we use G Suite for Education which is operated by Google. Students from 1st class on will have a weekly allocated supervised time to use the chrome books, and junior and senior infants will be set up for future use. Students would use their G Suite for Education account for the following:

  • Login to their own account on Chromebooks/laptops: each child will have their own G Suite credentials (username and password) to allow them to access their own personal account on our school Chromebooks/laptops. This allows them to save their work to the cloud after each lesson making it accessible to them from other devices within the school. With these credentials they can also use other Google tools such as Google docs, email, calendar.
  • Digital portfolio: students will keep the same credentials for their time in Moynalvey NS. This means that by the time they leave they will have a store of learning to look back on from their time in primary school.
  • Access Google Classroom: Google Classroom is a virtual learning space. This learning space would be led by the class teacher. Google Classroom allows the teacher to set activities for the class to work on either individually or collaboratively both in school and at home during Home Learning.
  • Learn 21st century digital citizenship skills: our aim is to provide students with the skills required to develop good digital citizenship. For example, children will gradually acquire privileges for their accounts, a new one being added each year/two years. In First Class children will just use the credentials to open the Chromebooks, whereas by Sixth Class, the aim is that students will have learnt how to comment on each other’s posts and content appropriately and be able to send emails.

Within the school we recognise the value of the internet as a resource, we must also acknowledge the potential risks to students. We feel the answer is not to ban the use of the internet in school but to teach pupils to recognise the risks and to become INTERNET Wise. We also allow limited access to ‘You Tube’ on a strictly supervised basis. This is to allow access to a huge range of educational material. The filter to prevent access to unsuitable material on You Tube is also in operation.

World Book Day 2024

The 7th of March 2024 was long penciled into the Moynalvey NS diary – World Book Day! Each year pupils across Ireland celebrate the magic and wonder of books, comics, literature and reading and Moynalvey NS is no exception.

Many of the pupils dressed up as their favourite book characters for the parade including Willy Wonka, Fairytale princess, Harry Potter and Greg Heffley! Some of the stand out costumes included the Three Little Pigs in 4th class and DogMan in 1st class. Even Mr. Brennan donned his Ravenclaw robes from his days in Hogwarts posing for pictures alongside Pippi Longstocking, Where’s Wally, Hermione Granger, Little Red Riding Hood and Olive Oyl from Popeye! All were there on display for a parade.

Pupils spent a wonderful day of activities completing table quizzes, older students doing paired reading with their younger peers and engaging in reading activities. In the run up to the day, students created book characters using potatoes. Likewise some of the famous book characters in potato form included Hermione Granger, Spider-Man and the Rainbow Fish!

Well done to all pupils, parents and staff for making World Book Day exceptional in Moynalvey NS. Well done to Ms. Helen Carty for organising the events.
