Our Classroom News!

All Things Mexico

6th Class have been very busy with the theme of Mexico this month.

The first half of the month focused on the Maya, the ancient peoples of modern day Mexico and other central American nations as part of History. The pupils learnt about the pyramids including the famous Chichen Itza. During class one of our pupils was sacrificed to the Mayan gods. Pupils learnt about the Mayan calendar and how it supposedly predicted that the world would end in 2012! Pupils made some excellent Mayan calendars themselves with clay. Finally the pupils saw some photographs of Mr. Brennan’s trip to Mexico 10 years ago where he saw the pyramids and ancient Mayan cities.

The second part of the month focused on modern day Mexico. Pupils learnt about Mexican culture in Geography such as the flag symbols, the people. Central to celebrations was “Díaz de los Meurtos” or the day of the dead. In Visual Arts pupils explored the theme of “calavera” or sugar skulls. In the first week they painted calavera in the style of Andy Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe piece. On Wednesday the pupils celebrated “Mexico Day” braving some carnitas (pork) tacos, Mexican agua drinks of Jamaica and Horchata. Finally pupils put their art skills to the ultimate test by painting calavera on each other.

Great work all around and great to see such passion for a topic across many subjects!

5th and 6th Class October Midterm

5th and 6th Class have had a busy first part of the term with a variety of activities.

As part of local history, the students visited the old school. A tour was conducted by Mary Dunne, BoM member and former pupil of Moynalvey NS. Mary told the pupils about life back when she went to school. Our Chairperson Frank, who lives where the old school is located, was also on site to give everyone access. Special thanks to Mary and Frank for making the students experience such a worthwhile lesson.

5th and 6th Class have been playing with Cumman na mBunscol football this year. While there were lots of highs, the season did end with semi and quarter final loses. Although it wasn’t to be, the players conducted themselves excellently.

Finally our 5th and 6th Class visited Navan Racecourse for an educational day. As part of the day the students got to meet the farrier, vet and jockeys. They also got up-close with some of the horses, including the opportunity to pet them. Finally the students got to ride a simulator, to experience horse riding first hand. A great day was had by all.
