Over the past two weeks we have been celebrating one of the most famous of “Mná na hÉireann” – St. Brigid. St. Brigid was born near Dundalk in Co. Louth over 1500 years ago. However she is mostly associated with Co. Kildare. Therefore it can easily be assumed that she must have passed through Co. Meath at some stage: possibly Moynalvey due our closeness to the Lilly White’s county!
In Religion and History, students have been learning about some of the stories of St. Brigid. The most famous story about St. Brigid is the story of her cloak. When promised a piece of land the size of her cloak by a local ruler, the cloak grew and grew. The site where this happened is believed to be modern-day Kildare Abbey.
In Music, students have been learning songs such as “A song for Brigid” which have echoed beautifully through the halls of Moynalvey NS. Finally Visual Arts has seen lovely work for St. Brigid including tapestries of her famous cloak and models of the famous St. Brigid’s cross. One pupil in 3rd class also made a traditional St. Brigid’s cross using reeds.
Well done to the students and teachers of Moynalvey NS for celebrating a very special woman in Irish history and culture. Lá Fhéile Bhrigíde daoibh go léir!
